Integrity Commission Discusses Strengthening Cooperation with the OIC on Corruption Prevention and Asset Recovery
In a statement, the Commission noted that Al-Lami met with Ould Cheikh Ahmed on the sidelines of the third ministerial meeting of anti-corruption law enforcement agencies from OIC member states, held in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The discussion focused on bolstering cooperation among OIC members—particularly their respective anti-corruption bodies—to facilitate the prevention and combatting of corruption, as well as the recovery of illicitly obtained and smuggled assets.
During the meeting, Dr. Al-Lami emphasized that Iraq, having overcome the ordeal of terrorism and defeated the terrorist gangs of ISIS, is now moving forward with reconstruction, development, and the fight against corruption, while strengthening its presence among Arab and Islamic nations. He pointed to a national anti-corruption campaign backed by popular will, explaining that the Iraqi legislator has entrusted the Commission with a mandate that encompasses prevention, investigation, public awareness, and asset recovery.
He pointed out that "corruption is a scourge from which no state is entirely free, necessitating a concerted effort, the exchange of information and expertise, and the removal of obstacles to cooperation in pursuing suspects and recovering assets. This is essential to prevent the creation of safe havens for those who flee abroad, while simultaneously upholding human rights and ensuring the rights of the accused in accordance with the law."
The Head of the Commission emphasized the importance of preventing corruption before it occurs by fostering a culture of integrity—integrating it into educational curricula and developing specialized academic and training programs. He further affirmed the Commission’s readiness to expand its cooperation with the Organization and its relevant bodies across member states.
The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) commended the remarks made by the head of the Federal Commission of Integrity during the ministerial meeting, as well as the Commission’s efforts in the recovery of assets.
He expressed the Organization’s interest in leveraging the Commission’s expertise in this field, as well as the programs offered by its academy for training staff from anti-corruption agencies in Islamic nations, thereby strengthening the exchange of experience and cooperation among member states. / End
