The Ministry Of Foreign Affairs Announces: Iraq Has Assumed The Chairmanship Of The (OIC) Group At The UN In New York
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry stated: "The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Luqman Abdul Rahim Al-Faily, has assumed the chairmanship of the OIC group, succeeding the Permanent Representative of Turkey, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız. This took place during a meeting of the group held at the United Nations headquarters."
The Ministry added that the meeting was attended by several ambassadors and representatives of OIC member states to the United Nations.
During the meeting, Ambassador Luqman Al-Faily expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the outgoing Turkish chairmanship for its efforts during its tenure. He emphasized Iraq’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and coordination among member states and to unifying positions on issues of common interest.
He further affirmed Iraq’s dedication—throughout its chairmanship—to supporting the causes of the Islamic world, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, as well as fostering Islamic solidarity and enhancing multilateral action. Such efforts are intended to serve the shared interests of member states and contribute to the consolidation of international peace and security.
Iraq’s assumption of this chairmanship underscores its active role in multilateral diplomacy and reflects its ongoing efforts to strengthen its presence in international forums—a commitment further highlighted by its upcoming chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China in 2025. This demonstrates Iraq’s keenness to contribute to the coordination of international positions and the defense of common interests./ End
