Iraqi Newspapers Highlight Government Plans to Make Contract Workers Permanent and Create 120,000 Jobs in 2027 Budget

Baghdad / NINA/ – Iraqi newspapers on Sunday focused on Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi’s directive to grant permanent employment status to all contract workers and daily-wage employees, create 120,000 new job opportunities, and hold talks between Iraqi Journalists Syndicate President Muayyad al-Lami and the finance minister on increasing incentive bonuses for journalists, artists, and writers under the 2027 federal budget.

Al-Sabah newspaper reported that, as part of the government’s efforts to expand employment opportunities for young people, strengthen job and economic stability, and ease the financial challenges facing the country, Prime Minister al-Zaidi on Saturday ordered the permanent appointment of all contract workers and daily-wage employees, alongside the creation of 120,000 new contract-based positions across all social groups and provinces under the 2027 budget.

The newspaper also highlighted ongoing parliamentary efforts to address financial pressures by following up on the seventh installment of social welfare assistance. Lawmakers are seeking to include the necessary allocations in the 2027 budget and finalize the procedures required to release the payments in coordination with the government and the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Media Office, al-Zaidi chaired a meeting on Saturday to discuss the details of the 2027 federal budget. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Tamim and Finance Minister Faleh al-Sari.

During the meeting, al-Zaidi directed that all contract workers and daily-wage employees be transferred to permanent positions. He also ordered the creation of 120,000 new contract-based jobs under the 2027 budget, covering all segments of society.

The new positions are to be distributed fairly among Iraq’s provinces according to population ratios. A dedicated online platform will also be established to manage applications and ensure fairness among applicants.

The prime minister stressed that the government would secure the necessary financial allocations to implement the decision, ensuring that the procedures for permanent appointments and the creation of new positions proceed in accordance with approved regulations and administrative frameworks.

Separately, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir al-Shammari, Director of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, met on Saturday with representatives of several groups of demonstrators, including holders of advanced degrees and top graduates from the third recruitment cohort, long-standing unemployed graduates, and healthcare and medical professionals.

Al-Shammari listened to their demands and concerns as part of efforts to maintain direct communication with citizens and gain a better understanding of their needs.

Al-Zaman newspaper, meanwhile, reported that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi had directed the permanent appointment of all contract workers and daily-wage employees, alongside the creation of 120,000 new contract-based positions under next year’s budget. The new positions will cover various segments of society and be distributed among the provinces according to population ratios, with an electronic recruitment platform to be introduced to ensure fairness among applicants.

According to a statement, al-Zaidi chaired a meeting to discuss the details of the federal budget, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Tamim and Finance Minister Faleh Sari. During the meeting, he ordered the permanent appointment of all contract workers and daily-wage employees, in addition to creating 120,000 new contract-based positions under the budget.

The statement added that the new positions would cover all segments of society and be distributed fairly among the provinces according to population ratios. A dedicated recruitment platform will also be launched to ensure equal opportunities and fairness among applicants.

Al-Zaidi stressed that the government would work to secure the necessary financial allocations to implement the decision, ensuring that permanent appointments and the creation of new positions proceed in accordance with approved regulations and administrative procedures.

Earlier, al-Zaidi said that US concerns over dollars reaching armed factions had affected the volume of cash supplies allocated to Iraq. He also revealed government efforts to secure additional shipments worth up to $2.5 billion to address the gap in the exchange rate.

In a televised interview on Friday, al-Zaidi said the government had increased cash dollar supplies from $140 million to $500 million per month and was working to raise US cash shipments to more than $1 billion monthly.

He added that the government was seeking to bring the dollar exchange rate back to 155,000 Iraqi dinars or lower. Previous experience, he noted, had shown that lowering the rate had not delivered the expected benefits to citizens, with the resulting price differences instead benefiting currency speculators.

Al-Zawraa newspaper, published by the Iraqi Journalists Syndicate, focused on a meeting between Arab Journalists Union President and Iraqi Journalists Syndicate Deputy Chairman Muayyad al-Lami and Finance Minister Faleh Sari to discuss increasing incentive bonuses for journalists, artists, and writers under the 2027 federal budget.

In a statement, the Ministry of Finance said Sari had received al-Lami to discuss the state of media work in Iraq and ways to support the journalistic community and strengthen its role in conveying the truth and serving society.

The statement added that the meeting addressed incentive bonuses allocated to journalists, artists, and writers, as well as ways to ensure their continuity and increase them under the 2027 budget.

The finance minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to continuing its support for these groups and expanding opportunities for them to fulfil their professional and creative missions, in recognition of their role in raising public awareness and reinforcing Iraq’s national cultural identity.

For his part, al-Lami praised the finance minister’s supportive stance toward the journalistic community and his attention to the incentive bonus issue. He also welcomed efforts to expand the scope of support for journalists, contributing to greater professional and financial stability./End
