Combating Misinformation and Hate: UNESCO Supports the Creation of Digital Solutions for Peace
The workshop—part of the "Social Media for Peace" project, funded by the European Union—sought to transform young people's ideas into viable digital projects. It focused on enhancing their skills in innovation, application design, and the use of artificial intelligence to verify information and curb the manipulation of digital content.
The event brought together young people, journalists, content creators, developers, and technology enthusiasts. The training addressed challenges such as "deepfakes," the manipulation of images and videos, and the spread of misleading news. Participants also explored the potential for developing smart tools to verify news, detect manipulated content, and promote media and information literacy. The discussions focused on the importance of combining technical solutions with media literacy and ethical responsibility, ensuring respect for human rights and freedom of expression, while helping to mitigate digital harms and foster dialogue and social cohesion.
The hackathon’s themes included the development of fact-checking applications, educational platforms to promote critical thinking, digital tools to counter hate speech, and initiatives that leverage technology to build bridges of communication between different segments of society.
This initiative is part of UNESCO’s efforts to empower young people to contribute to building a safer and more responsible digital space by linking technical skills with societal needs, and by encouraging innovation to address the challenges posed by the evolving digital environment. / End
