Iraq Takes Center Stage in Global Investment… Rapid Growth and Toyota Paves the Way for Local Manufacturing
This shift comes at a time of accelerating openness to international partnerships, reflecting growing confidence in the Iraqi economy's ability to absorb foreign investments and contribute to enhancing comprehensive growth.
In light of this, MP Mona Al-Gharabi affirmed that the stability Iraq has witnessed in recent years has encouraged international companies to enter the Iraqi market to develop infrastructure in the electricity, water, sanitation, and oil sectors.
Al-Gharabi told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) that "Iraq's openness to economic cooperation projects and the boost to investment, aimed at developing economic relations with countries around the world, has led major companies to look forward to Iraq's continued efforts to improve the investment climate, including strengthening legislation and economic regulations, particularly those aimed at attracting foreign companies."
She added, "The priorities of the Iraq Development Fund are focused on six areas: education, agriculture, housing, digital transformation, manufacturing and food security, and the environment. These priorities aim to support investment opportunities and enhance the role of the private sector through information exchange and by supporting and promoting business activities."
For his part, Sardar Al-Bibani, Head of Toyota Iraq, told NINA, "We need more flexible legislation and more precise regulations for import procedures. We have a big dream that we are striving to achieve: to become major producers within Iraq." "We need government cooperation from relevant authorities to give us this opportunity to serve the country and its citizens and protect the environment," he said.
He added, "All Toyota products are environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles, fully compliant with Iraqi standards. They come with a warranty, a recall system, and free maintenance through our agents in Iraq. We have 10 main dealerships in Baghdad and the provinces, and more than 40 service branches."
Al-Bibani emphasized, "We are working more extensively with the private sector in Iraq, and government agencies have responded to us with rapid progress. This aligns with our goal of serving the Iraqi public by providing vehicles that offer comprehensive safety."
In contrast, Chief Operating Officer Junsuke Yamatoya told the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA), "Global companies, led by Toyota Iraq, are currently focusing on hybrid vehicles due to the lack of charging stations in Iraq."
He added, "These hybrid vehicles are the best solution for Iraq's climate. They are more fuel-efficient and offer a high level of safety and protection, minimizing the risk of accidents." For his part, Khalid al-Jabri, head of the Usul Development Organization, told the Iraqi National News Agency (NINA) that "the need to increase the number of foreign companies operating in Iraq remains, given that Iraq currently offers 27 million job opportunities, and 16.5 million children will be eligible to enter the labor market in ten years. Therefore, we need major companies that can provide us with skills and expertise and raise the local level of young people to meet international standards, so that young Iraqis are qualified and ready to work both inside and outside Iraq."
He added, "There is a greater focus on the domestic level than others, but expansion to the regional and global levels is necessary. This requires the presence of reputable international companies that can assist Iraq in this regard, with priority given to the fields of digital technology, pharmaceuticals, medical and health industries, and renewable energy."
