Baghdad / NINA / - A Report by Youssef Salman: The Supreme Judicial Council hosted, today, Monday, a joint meeting of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and governmental institutions and independent bodies to discuss and support the new international project "Community Communication and Media for Peace", funded by the European Union and will be implemented by the organization in Iraq.

The Judicial Development Institute hosted these discussions that focused on reviewing the project's objectives and implementation mechanisms, as the President of the Baghdad Karkh Court of Appeal, Judge Amer Hassan, highlighted UNESCO's efforts to support community peace and media and information organization in Iraq.

Hassan said in a statement to the National Iraqi News Agency (NINA), "This project is the result of a long cooperation between the judiciary and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in programs to eradicate information illiteracy and increase digital knowledge, and combat media misinformation, false news and rumors."

He explained, "The publishing and media courts were established in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), with regard to training judges working in the publishing and media courts and forming the Council of Freedom of Expression Judges linked to the World Council of Freedom of Expression Judges at UNESCO, reaching the stage of the Community Communication and Media for Peace project, which aims to involve the largest possible number of concerned institutions, professional unions, civil society organizations, and the press and media community in the project so that we can establish sound and solid rules for how to use social media sites well and prevent bad uses."

For his part, the project officer at UNESCO Iraq, Dhiaa Thabet, reviewed the project's goals and axes, most notably the establishment of a national team that includes government institutions, in addition to a civil alliance composed of civil society organizations and activists on social media, to enhance responsible media and consolidate the discourse of peace.

Thabet said, in a statement to the National Iraqi News Agency / NINA /, that "the project "Communication and Community Media for Peace" came after a series of lengthy meetings and a request submitted by the Iraqi government and the Supreme Judicial Council, with the aim of finding communication channels with global digital platforms in order to reach points of convergence as civil society, government authorities and the judiciary, to organize the digital environment in Iraq, and organize social media and community media sites in a way that preserves rights and freedoms and preserves freedom of expression and at the same time does not place limits and restrictions on the mechanisms of use, as it goes to eradicate digital and information illiteracy and improve the mechanisms of use, educate the public and try to reach media discourses and social communication that reject hatred, violence, misleading and falsification."

He added, "This is the first session to establish a national team consisting of a group of government actors, institutions, academies and independent bodies, including the Communications and Media Commission and the Human Rights Commission, and under the auspices of the Iraqi judiciary to be the main partner in the project," indicating that "the national team will take it upon itself to establish the first Iraqi international study that reflects the negative effects that Iraq suffers from in the field of privacy in the use of social media platforms and community media, so that we can diagnose the sources of the defect in relation to the policies of global digital platforms and find solutions and treatments, and force these platforms to deal with the Iraqi situation in a way that supports peacemaking and societal cohesion."

For his part, the Head of the Security Media Cell, Major General Saad Maan, confirmed that the project focuses on employing social media sites and platforms to build sustainable peace in Iraq.

Maan said, in a statement to the National Iraqi News Agency / NINA /, that "This is a blessed step by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to launch this project that has succeeded in a number of countries and today it is launched from Iraq."

He added, "The Security Media Cell and the Joint Operations Command will be an active element in the project, because it addresses the issue of social media sites and platforms in Iraq, and there are problems in legislation and legal culture, and we also need to sustain community peace in Iraq by enhancing sustainable security," indicating that "the project attracts purposeful content creators and positive actors, and is the general framework for limiting the misuse of these sites and platforms in accordance with the authority of the law and the judiciary."

The project aims to open the doors of communication with global digital platforms to facilitate the task of regulating freedom of expression through social media networks and digital platforms locally.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to implement the project with the support and supervision of the national team, and to emphasize the role of the Iraqi judiciary in ensuring the success of the initiative and strengthening its legal framework. / End
